Utena is genuinely one of the deepest and most complex explorations of gender as a social system in modern entertainment; its layers of metaphor have been being unraveled for literally 25 years. I recommend the Palace Perspective essay, which solidified for me the thesis of romance as a reproductive structure of gender.
